5 Reasons Pumpkin is the Fall Superfood

Pumpkin bread, pumpkin oatmeal, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin chili – the options are endless! Believe it or not, fall is here and it’s getting closer to the holiday season. But we’re not complaining! It’s the time of year when we all get obsessed with everything-pumpkin. Lucky for us, it’s not a bad thing.

In fact, pumpkin has several health benefits that make us love the squash even more. Here are few reasons why pumpkin is the superfood of fall:

  1. Helps with weight loss. Pumpkin is actually the ideal vegetable for weight loss. It is low in calories and high in dietary fiber. In fact, a ½ Cup of pumpkin is only 40 calories with 8 grams of fiber*! Fiber is great for weight loss because it takes longer to digest, making you fuller longer. It also slows the rate at which sugar is absorbed by your body, stabilizing your blood sugar levels.
  2. Good for the heart. Fiber, potassium and vitamin C all support a healthy heart. Not only does that fiber help your digestion and weight loss, but it also helps lower the risk of heart disease. One Harvard study* found that those who ate a diet high in fiber had a 40% lower risk of coronary heart disease compared to those who ate a diet low in fiber.
  3. Prevents cancer. Pumpkin is extremely nutritious and has a lot of vitamins and minerals. With significant amounts of potassium, beta-carotene, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, iron and phytoestrogens, pumpkin can help prevent certain types of cancer. In fact, carotenoids have been shown todecrease the risk of lung, colon, bladder, cervical, breast, and skin cancer.
  4. Great for the skin and hair. Vitamin C, carotenoids, minerals and B vitamins all help protect the skin and hair with antioxidants and can help promote collagen production. By including pumpkin in your diet, or as a skin and hair treatment, you will improve your skin tone and elasticity, reverse UV damage, improve circulation, and promote healthy hair and regrowth*.
  5. Post-workout treat. In 1 Cup of pumpkin, there is about 564 mg of potassium, which is more than a banana!* Potassium helps us restore the balance of electrolytes in our body after a tough workout. It’s also great for our muscles and contains less sugar than a banana.

It’s okay to be obsessed with pumpkin this time of year. We only wish it was in season year-round! If you want to embrace the autumn flavor of pumpkin, come in and try Fred’s Harvest Pumpkin Muffin. What’s your favorite pumpkin recipe? Share with us below!
