Fred and Ricky’s Promotes Sustainability and Local Businesses
At Fred and Ricky’s, we value sustainability and supporting local businesses. It’s the heart and soul of what we do. We believe it’s important to know where your food is coming from, how it was grown and where it was produced. The food production system and our diets play a crucial role in sustainability.
Sustainability means living in a way that allows society and the world to remain diverse and productive indefinitely. The world’s population is rapidly expanding and it’s important that food sustainability is a priority to ensure that there will be both enough food to eat and access to nutritious foods. At Fred and Ricky’s, we believe that plant-based eating is not just the healthiest way for people to eat, it’s also the only sustainable way for us to feed the world.
If we as a community work together to promote sustainability and our local businesses, the sum of our actions will have a powerful impact. At Fred and Ricky’s, we purchase our ingredients and products from local farmers whenever we can. Not only does fresh locally grown food taste better, it also supports our local farmers and families. Also, all of our containers are BPA-free, reusable and recyclable!
We think it’s essential to provide local food and reusable containers to our customers, but our actions don’t stop there. We compost everything we can, and before our food spoils, we donate it to local food pantries and shelters to minimize waste. Fred and Ricky’s works with Operation Food Search and regularly donates food to help end hunger in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Other local businesses we enjoy working with include Mofu Tofu and Kaldi’s Coffee.
Here are some steps you can take to promote sustainability:
Eat more plant-based foods. Animal agriculture is highly inefficient and uses an enormous amount of resources. The average person who eats a plant-based diet can save 162,486 gallons of water a year, and cut their carbon footprint in half*!
Practice mindful eating. Try to minimize waste by only cooking or ordering what you can eat, or save your leftovers and eat them later. Only eat when you’re hungry. This helps with weight management, and it also helps you save resources.
Eat and buy local. When you support an independent, locally-owned business, more of your money is used in the community, which strengthens the economic base. Buying local supports a more sustainable food system by preserving farmland, providing fair wages for local workers, and keeping money circulating in the local economy. Local food is also some of the freshest food available!
Recycle and compost your food scraps. Recycle and reuse as much as you can. Take a step further and create your own compost! Composting uses the natural process of decomposition to convert your waste into a nutrient-rich soil you can use on your garden.
Taking care of our bodies, our staff, our planet and the communities we live in is important to us at Fred and Ricky’s. Let’s work together as a community to support a sustainable community and promote our local businesses. Please contact us if you have any questions about our sustainability efforts or our plant-based food.

After years of yo-yo dieting and high cholesterol, Dave gave up the foods he previously thought were healthy and committed to a whole food plant-based lifestyle. In just 2.5 months he lost 35lbs and reduced his cholesterol by 80 points. After six months he's at the same weight he was as a high school athlete and he feels better than he has in years.
This Saturday, January 13 has been designated National Gluten Free Day. By whom, we are not sure! And for that matter, who really cares? More important to us is that we make it easy for the ever-growing gluten free community to eat incredibly delicious, nutritious, plant based meals that delight the taste buds and satisfy even the heartiest of appetites.
Celebrating World Vegan Day is a wonderful way to acknowledge the many benefits of eating a whole food plant based diet. From it's potential to improve individual health and wellbeing to the benefits it brings to the environment and animals, it is hard to not to want to celebrate daily.
