Beans, the magical fruit, don’t have to make you toot!
We promote eating beans because of their awesome benefits to your gut and overall health. They’re the least expensive source of protein, and they contain a powerhouse of nutrients, including antioxidants and vitamins. However, some try to avoid beans because of the gas that comes along with them. But what if we told you that you could de-gas beans by the way you prepare and cook them?
First of all, tooting is perfectly normal and healthy. In fact, a person passes gas an average of 14 times a day*. When consuming beans, you may find that you’re a little more gassy than normal. This is because beans’ natural sweetness comes from oligosaccharides, a group of sugars that are far too big to digest through the intestinal wall on their own*. Instead of getting broken down by our guts’ enzymes, these sugars go through our small intestine and large intestine. Then the bacteria in our gut consumes these sugars, creating the gases that produce what we all know as a toot.
The good news is that these sugars and complex carbs are water soluble. Ditching canned beans might be the answer to finding toot-free beans. Soaking and rinsing beans will make a noticeable difference. Soaking before cooking them allows the sugars to filter out.
You’ll want to soak the beans for about 8 hours, or overnight. If you want to get it done faster, you can speed-soak the beans in a pressure cooker. Once the beans are done soaking, drain the water and rinse. Slowly boil the beans to fully cook them. Once they’re done cooking, rinse them again and you have toot-free beans!
Beans are too good for the body to avoid. They have amazing benefits and should be a part of everyone’s diet.
